MONTEVALLO, Ala. – No. 12 Georgia College
& State University baseball (28-12, 16-4 PBC) clinched the
Peach Belt Conference (PBC) West Division Championship with a pair
of wins Saturday night, beating the University of Montevallo
(12-34, 5-18 PBC) 16-5 and 19-12. The Bobcats out-hit the Falcons
42-22 over the two games.
Game one was a 16-5 win, the 'Cats scoring two runs each
in the first three innings and carrying momentum for a victory.
Second baseman Jason
Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) was the hitting star with five
runs batted in, going 3-for-4 scoring twice as well. First baseman
Matt Pitts (Brunswick, Ga.) was 3-for-6 with
four RBI, including a three run home run, scoring twice.
Rightfielder Shawn Ward
(Martinez, Ga.) and centerfielder Sean
Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) each had three hits, Harrell
blasting a home run to center and plated two while scoring twice,
Ward scoring twice and driving in one.
Lefty Jason Nicholas (Wright City, Mo.)
tossed five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks
while fanning five in the win (3-2). Montevallo starter Heath
Tapscott (2-3) allowed six earned runs over six innings.
Montevallo's hitting star was leftfielder Josh Headley, going
2-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Game two was more of the same, with the top three spots in the
Bobcat order going a combined 10-for-14 with nine RBI and seven
runs. Harrell and third baseman Steve
Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) were each 3-for-4 with three
RBI, Harrell scoring three and Muoio twice. Harrell added his
second home run of the day, his 11th of the year.
Leftfielder Kyle Allen
(Conyers, Ga.) tallied the most hits on the squad with
four in six trips, driving in three and scoring twice. Ward was
3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs, while freshman
Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) came in as a
reserve first baseman, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
Designated hitter BentonYaun
(Marietta, Ga.) and his replacement Andrew
Evans (Milledgeville, Ga.) went a combined 4-for-6
with an RBI and a run, Evans ripping a pair of doubles.
Junior righty Eric
Pettepher (Gordon, Ga.) tossed eight innings, allowing
six earned runs, fanning six in the win (5-0). Montevallo starter
Joey Noro dropped to 2-4 with the 3 2/3 inning effort, surrendering
10 runs. The game-two hitting star for the Falcons was first
baseman Chris Sosebee, hitting 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs,
adding a double, as both teams combined for 12 doubles.
The Bobcats finish the three-game set tomorrow, April 18 with
one game at 2 p.m. eastern.
