MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Tallying a Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) single-game record with 33 hits, the No. 12
Georgia College & State University baseball team (29-12, 17-4
PBC) took a series sweep to clinch at least a share of the
conference title at the University of Montevallo (12-35, 5-19 PBC)
Sunday by a 21-6 score.
The PBC West Division Champions, Georgia College can finish no
worse than tied with No. 8 Francis Marion University for the PBC
Regular-Season title, picking up its third PBC Championship in
school history. Georgia College took back-to-back honors in 2006
and 2007.
Each of the nine spots in the Bobcat order had at least two hits
today, the most coming from the third and fifth spots, each
tallying five. Third baseman Steve
Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) had a 4-for-4 day with two RBI
and two runs, while first baseman Matt Pitts
(Brunswick, Ga.) went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
The 7-8-9 hitters combined for 12-for-18, scoring six runs and
plating five, as Richard
Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.), Jason
Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) and ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) each went 4-for-6 with two runs scored.
Pirkle ripped his team-leading 12th home run of the
season in the sixth as part of an eight-run frame, and drove in
four.
Rightfielder Shawn Ward
(Martinez, Ga.) hit his 10th home run of the
season in the third, a two-run blast to tie the game up. The
Bobcats blew open the game with eight runs each in the fourth and
sixth innings. Freshman Cody Maas
(Alpharetta, Ga.) hit a moonshot for the first home run of
his career in the ninth, a three-run pinch hit blast into the
parking lot in left.
Leftfielder Kyle Allen
(Conyers, Ga.) had three RBI and three hits, while
centerfielder Sean
Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) had two hits and two RBI. BentonYaun
(Marietta, Ga.) scored twice with two hits as well.
Senior righty Martin
Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) improved to 7-1 on the
season with five innings of work, allowing three runs with one
strikeout. Montevallo reliever Cameron Sokalski (0-4) took the
loss, allowing 10 runs in two innings. First baseman and reigning
PBC Player of the Week Chris Sosebee was the hitting star for the
Falcons, going 2-for-3 with five RBI on two home runs.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.,
hosting No. 17 Valdosta State University.
