MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College
& State University softball team (11-30, 4-12 PBC) split with
Flagler College (26-20, 8-8 PBC) Saturday, rebounding from a 7-4
loss for a 5-2 win at the Peeler Complex.
In game one the Saints plated the first four runs of the game,
with Georgia College reaching the scoring column in the fifth on a
Jessica Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) RBI
single.
The Saints responded with three more runs for a 7-1 lead.
Georgia College plated two in the sixth and one more in the
seventh, but could get no closer.
Leftfielder Belourse Jean-Francis (Naples, Fla.) went
2-for-3 with a run, including a double. Pitcher Haley
Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) added a 2-for-3 effort as
well, following Jean-Francis' double with one of her own for
an RBI. Burnett took the loss in four innings of work, allowing
four runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Kelly Riddick (16-10) went five innings in the victory,
surrendering one run. Centerfielder Lauren Ely went 3-for-4 with
three RBI and a run.
In game two, great pitching from Burnett and a three-run fourth
made the difference in a 5-2 win.
Burnett went all seven frames (9-14), surrendering two runs,
scattering eight hits and striking out three. She also drove in two
runs and scored once. Tied at 1-1, the Bobcats opened the game up
in the fourth.
Jean-Francis led off with a single and stole second. Burnett
promptly ripped a double to left, bringing home the runner for a
2-1 lead. After an out, second baseman Kayla
Smith (Lexington, S.C.) took the first pitch she saw
deep over the left center fence for a 4-1 advantage. The home run
was the 17th in Smith's career, one out of fifth
place in GCSU history.
After the Saints cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth, Solomon
singled home pinch runner Melanie
Goolsby (Guyton, Ga.) in the sixth for the insurance
run and the 5-2 final.
Jean-Francis and centerfielder Allison Schwimer (Cumming, Ga.) each went
2-for-3 with a run scored in game two.
Kristen Chapman (8-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on five
hits over 3 1/3 innings. Shortstop Heather Hill was 2-for-4 with
two RBI and a run, blasting a solo shot in the fifth.
For the two games, Jean-Francis went a combined 4-for-6 with two
runs and a double.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, April 7 at 2 p.m.,
traveling to Armstrong Atlantic State University.
