MORROW, Ga. – The Georgia College &
State University women's tennis team (12-11) toppled a
conference champion Thursday, clobbering Lincoln Memorial
University (18-4) 5-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast
Region #2 Tournament. The Bobcats advance to play host No. 12
Clayton State University (16-7) Friday at 2 p.m.
The Bobcats started off on the right foot against the South
Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular-season and tournament champions,
taking two of three doubles bouts with wins at the first and second
slots.
Senior Diane Danna (Paris, France) and junior
Bertille Lion (Lyon, France) edged Sofia Lopez
Mimendi and Ann Indeherberge 8-6 in first doubles action. Lion and
Danna improved to 13-10 on the year.
Freshmen Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and
Kayla Barksdale (Martinez, Ga.) teamed for an
8-1 drubbing of Amanda Horenkamp and Mandy Mills in the second
slot. The win brings the Bobcat duo's record even to 11-11.
Sophomore Adriana Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) and
freshman Linda Mosa (Stockholm, Sweden) also
dropped an 8-3 match to Leah Donoff and Melanie Smith.
Needing three more wins, the Bobcats got victories at first and
third singles, as Danna nearly blanked Donoff 6-0, 6-1 and Lion
toppled Indeherberge 6-1, 6-2. Both winners improved to 17-4 in
singles action, Danna with wins in her last seven, Lion in her last
six. Barksdale dropped a second-singles match 6-3, 6-2 to Lopez
Mimendi before Lingner clinched the team victory.
The freshman made short work of Mills 6-1, 6-2 at fourth
singles, Lingner getting her seventh win of the year.
Georgia College advances to face host Clayton Friday, May 7 at 2
p.m. in regional semifinal action at Laker Courts.
