Battle on the Beach: #30 Bobcat Women Ground Statesmen, 6-3

PENSACOLA, Fla. The No. 30 Georgia College women's tennis team (11-4) played a very tough opponent in Delta State University (7-3) Saturday afternoon at the White Sands Invitational, escaping with the victory, 6-3.

The Bobcats took the early lead, dominating the doubles portion, 2-1. Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) and Bertille Lion (Lyon, France) finished up last but got GC the all important lead, edging out Laura Monqin and Erin Teivans, 8-5. The Bobcats' first doubles pair is now 9-5 on the season, including five straight wins.

May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) and Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) picked up another win, finishing up first and downing Lucia Lawsz and Amandine Gourques, 8-4. Lisa Setyon (Paris, France) and Kelly Edwards (Roswell, Ga.) suffered GC's only loss in doubles, losing to Maria Moya and Hidemi Mayeshiro, 8-5.

The Bobcats would hold that lead through the singles matches winning, 4-2. Lion played in the one slot for the Bobcats but lost to Monqin, 7-6, 6-0. Johnson played in the two spot for GC and defeated Gourques in a three set marathon, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Barksdale clinched the day for the 'Cats toppling Laws, 6-2, 6-4.

Lochner got back on the right foot after dropping two straight by dropping Teivans, 6-2, 6-4. Setyon continued to dominate as she downed Moya, 6-3, 6-1. Setyon now holds a team best 11-2 record. Linger dropped GC's last singles match of the day to Maveshiro, 6-2, 6-1.

The Bobcats will get back to work tomorrow against the University of North Alabama Sunday, March 27 at 10 a.m.
