Bobcat Baseball Splits at Montevallo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Georgia College baseball team (16-11, 8-5 PBC) played two vastly different games in doubleheader action Saturday at the University of Montevallo (16-15, 10-7 PBC) losing a 2-1 pitchers' duel to start, then taking a 13-10 shootout in game two.

Game one featured two great gunslingers on the hill, as Michael Shreves (2-4) went 6 2/3 innings allowing one run with 10 strikeouts for the win. GC lefty starter Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.) went the distance in the loss (2-3), scattering seven hits and four walks for just two runs, fanning four.

The long-ball would be GC's downfall in game one, as both of Montevallo's runs came on solo shots, one in the first and one in the fourth. GC had three multi-hit performers as Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.), Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) and Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) each went 2-for-4, Funk driving in the lone run with a single to center. UM's Zack Willoughby and Josh Headley each hit the home runs.

Game two featured more fireworks, as the teams combined for 32 hits and 23 runs. GC got hits from every slot in the order, save one. Funk, Karsten Strieby (Blair, Was.) and Jeremy Donaldson (Winder, Ga.) each hit home runs for the Bobcats.

The top three slots in the GC order went a combined 8-for-16 with four runs, six RBI and a home run. Strieby, Funk and Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) each had three-hit games. Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.), Donaldson and Ardeeser each recorded two.

Bobcat starter Darin Wiltgen (Reno, Nev.) was the recipient of the run surge, going 5 2/3 innings allowing six runs and fanning four in the win (4-1). The Bobcats sent seven pitchers to the hill, with Taylor Hart (Colbert, Ga.) getting the final out for his first save of the year.

Falcon starter Alex Guilford (2-3) went 5 2/3 innings as well in the loss. First baseman Heath Peterson, the reigning National Player of the Week, went 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs, swatting his ninth and 10th home runs of the season.

The Bobcats and Falcons square off for a series-deciding contest tomorrow, March 25 at 2 p.m. eastern.
