Bobcat Baseball Splits Action with Barry and Florida Tech

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MELBOURNE, Fla. – In a unique scheduling quirk, the Georgia College baseball team (18-12) split a doubleheader Tuesday, taking on two different teams. The Bobcats beat Barry University (14-12) 8-3, then lost to Florida Tech (18-12) 12-7.

Game one was controlled by the Bobcats, as they put up a three-spot in the second inning and never relinquished the lead. Second baseman Seth Bancroft (Sugar Hill, Ga.) had the big blow in the inning, a two-run double, followed by a Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) RBI single.

Righthander Derek McGowan (Raytown, Mo.) picked up the win (3-4) in relief, throwing four innings while not allowing a single earned run. Reliever Zack Hula (Kennesaw, Ga.) mowed down the Bucs for the last two innings, recording five whiffs and just one hit.

Funk finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while rightfielder Bryce Williams (Manhattan, Kan.) was 2-for-3, tallying a pair of RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, the Bobcats dug an early hole and couldn't recover. The Panthers started out with an 8-0 lead after four innings, thanks to a four-run outburst in the fourth.

GC's own four-run rally in the seventh, led by RBI doubles from Funk and Karsten Strieby (Blair, Was.), cut the lead to 9-6, but a three-run Florida Tech eighth pushed it back out of reach. Strieby finished 3-for-5, scoring twice. Catcher Benton Yaun (Marietta, Ga.), Funk and designated hitter Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) each recorded two hits. Yaun scored a run, while Funk scored one and drove in another.

Righthanded starter Taylor Hart (Colbert, Ga.) took the loss (2-2), allowing four runs over the first three innings of work.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 30 at 6 p.m., hosting North Georgia for the beginning of a three-game Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Divisional set. The 'Cats are 9-5 in conference play, first in the West Division. The Saints are 15-14 overall with a 5-10 conference mark, good for fourth in the West.

The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 10 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level.
