Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – West No. 1-seed Georgia
College baseball team (29-21) saw its season come to a close
Thursday evening at the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship
Tournament in a 12-2 loss to East No. 2-seed Francis Marion
University (35-15).
The Bobcats put up the first two runs of the game in the very
first inning, when a pair of hits set up a run-scoring groundout
and single, but it would be all the GC bats could muster. FMU took
the lead with a three-run third and never looked back.
The Patriots rattled off 17 hits with four doubles, scoring runs
in all but one inning after breaking into the scoring column in the
third.
All-PBC Second Team selection Matt Broderick (8-2) went six
strong innings for the win, allowing just two runs. Leadoff hitter
Michael Wilson set the table, going 4-for-6 with three runs.
Centerfielder Patrick
Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) got on with a one-out single
in the first for GC, followed by a double off the top of the
leftfield wall from All-PBC third baseman Travis Echols
(Suwanee, Ga.). All-PBC designated hitter Cody Maas
(Alpharetta, Ga.) followed with an RBI groundout to short,
plating Daugherty. Echols scored from second on the ensuing single
from second baseman Jeremy
Donaldson (Winder, Ga.). Donaldson finished 2-for-4
with the RBI.
Lefty starter Mike Guinane
(Glenview, Ill.) took the loss (3-7), going 6 2/3 innings
allowing six earned runs.
The loss brings the season to a close for Bobcat baseball, going
29-21 with a 19-10 PBC mark, good for a PBC West Division title. GC
landed three on the all-conference teams, with Echols and Maas
taking first team, and reliever Matt LaMothe
(Troy, Mich.) landing on the second.
