MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (8-2) continued its winning ways Tuesday, taking both games from the University of West Georgia Wolves, 8-0 and 7-1. The Bobcats now have a six-game winning streak.
Game one of the doubleheader ended early, with the Bobcats using the mercy rule to defeat the Wolves after just five innings. Pitcher Marisa Boyette (Marietta) tossed her fifth complete game in as many starts and her notched her first shutout of the young season on the way to a 5-0 record. She struck out eight Wolves and only walked one in her five innings. The lone hit Boyette allowed was in the first inning. Her season ERA now sits at a remarkable 1.17.
Freshman Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) and senior Kristen Humphries (Columbus) stole the show offensively, both compiling a multi-hit and multi-RBI game. Coursey was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in the contest, while Humphries also went 2-for-3 and driving in three runs. A Danielle Bernstein (Cumming) single was the final straw as she plated freshman Baylee Hall (Hephzibah) in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.
The Bobcats showed of their power in game two of the day, sending two balls out of the Peeler Complex. Junior Lacey Najafi (Suwanee) kicked things off with a two-run blast in the second inning to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead, her first of the season. Georgia College was leading 3-1 when Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) stepped to the plate in the fourth with the bases loaded. The junior sent the ball flying over wall for a grand slam, her first long ball of the season.
Not wanting to be out-done by Boyette, sophomore Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) took to the circle in game two, throwing the second Bobcat complete game of the day and ninth of the year. Lewis allowed just one run on four hits, lowering her ERA to 3.69. She struck out five batters and did not surrender any free passes.
The Bobcats will look to continue their winning streak as they travel to Columbus, Ga. this weekend for the Cougar Classic hosted by Columbus State University. Georgia College will play four games over two days with the first coming Saturday, Feb. 14 at noon against Lincoln Memorial University.
