MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – An off-balance miraculous 25-footer found the mark Saturday night at the Centennial Center, sending Georgia College men's basketball (9-15, 3-12 PBC) to a heartbreaking 64-61 defeat at the hands of Young Harris College (9-12, 6-9 PBC).
Tied at 61-61 after YHC's C.J. Wilson made a floating lay-up with 18 ticks left, the Bobcats worked quickly to try and get the win. After a missed shot tipped out to Young Harris' Ben Waterhouse, a long outlet found Wilson for the game-winner to the right side of the arc.
The circus shot overshadowed a pair of herculean efforts for Georgia College tonight, as senior Larrentis Thomas (McDonough) and junior Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Florida) did all they could to keep the Bobcats in the game.
Thomas finished with 24 points—three off his career high—and 13 rebounds for his third straight double-double and 12th overall this season. Thomas hit 9-for-13 from the floor.
Harris added a 22-point effort of his own, making nine of his 17 shots, his ninth 20-point game of the season. The pair got little help, however as the remainder of the squad scored 15 total points, including just a pair from the bench.
The Bobcats out-shot Young Harris 43 percent (23-53) to just 36 percent (22-62), but the Mountain Lions had a 5-1 advantage in threes made, including the game-winner.
Bjorn Walker led YHC with 18 points and 10 boards, as the Lions had two double-doubles with Kevin Altidor adding 13 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson finished with 14 points.
The loss puts Georgia College at 3-12 in conference play, positioned seventh in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) West. The Bobcats are four games back from the fourth and final playoff spot with four games remaining.
Junior Rio McMillian (Park Forest, Illinois) swatted three more shots tonight, giving him 49 blocks on the season, passing Aaron Clark (2005-06) for third in school history.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m., playing host to the University of North Georgia.
