Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 26 Georgia College baseball team (3-4) proved to be rather rude hosts to West Virginia State University (0-3) sweeping the Yellow Jackets for the start of their season, complete with doubleheader wins Saturday of 14-13 and 21-10. Senior leftfielder Colton Montgomery (Cartersville) hit two home runs in the second inning of game two.

A solo home run by Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Michigan) in the bottom of the eighth provided the difference in game one, capping a wild offensive game. The game totaled 36 hits, six errors and 27 runs. Hazel finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs.

Dylan Cook (Portola Valley, California) moved from second base to centerfield for game one, providing a 3-for-4 effort with four RBI and two runs, including a triple and home run. Cook's move to center gave second baseman John Davis (Marietta) a start, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville) and first baseman Clay Ardeeser (Loganville) each had three hits, Ardeeser scoring three runs and driving in another, while Benson scored twice.

The 2-3-4-5 hitters for Georgia College went a combined 11-for-16 with eight RBI and nine runs, two home runs, a triple and three doubles.

Reliever Jordan Brooks (Macon) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win (1-0) stranding a hit and fanning one. Freshman righty Cameron Busby (Grovetown) picked up his second save with a shutout ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Bobcats took over game two with a 12-run second inning, tallying eight hits, an error, a walk and a hit-batsman. Leftfielder Montgomery hit two home runs in the inning, a pair of three-run shots.

Montgomery finished the game with seven RBI on a 3-for-3 effort, scoring three times as well. Centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville) nearly matched Montgomery with six RBI on 4-for-4, scoring four times.

Designated hitter Brandon Purcell (Glennville) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, while rightfielder Jake Sandlin (Evans) had two hits in three trips and an RBI. The Bobcat outfield in game two went a combined 9-for-10 with 14 RBI and seven runs.

Reliever Conner Alford (Macon) picked up his first Bobcat win, despite getting just the final two outs of the second inning.

The Bobcat bats will try to remain hot despite having a week off, returning to action Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. in doubleheader action at Flagler College.
