DAHLONEGA, Ga. – In a match that was rescheduled twice and delayed again Monday by rain, the No. 20 Georgia College men's tennis team (11-7, 7-2 PBC) shook off the rust and busted out a 6-1 win at No. 21 University of North Georgia (14-4, 6-4 PBC). The Bobcats' last match was nine days ago.
The Bobcats had a solid start, up 2-1 after doubles action. The only doubles loss came in the first slot as No. 23 Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and Vincent Castermans (Grenoble, France) were upset by Julian Schoeller and Philipp Mueller, 8-1.
In second doubles, Taylor Powell (Martinez) and Jannik Kumbier (Neumünster, Germany) beat Alexander Reinauer and Tomas Schneider 9-8 (7-4). Powell and Kumbier are now 9-8 on the season. Third doubles also went Georgia College's way, as Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) and Pedro Ecenarro (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) posted an 8-6 win over Matheus Guida and Graham Shaw. The win put Ecenarro and Campus in double-digit victories at 10-5.
Hass picked up the team's first singles result, starting a 4-0 run. The Bobcat junior controlled Guida with a pair of 6-2 sets, getting Hass' record above .500 at 8-7. The next win came from Hass' homophone as Kumbier put up two 6-4 sets to beat Schoeller in the third slot.
The next two wins came very close together, halting play for the 6-1 Bobcat win. Anton Waern (Taby, Sweden) beat Schneider 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth slot, Waern improving his record to 9-8. Ecenarro continues his amazing freshman year, improving to 12-3 in singles action by topping Reinauer at 6-4, 6-2.
The win puts Georgia College at 7-2 in league play, good for third in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Standings. The Bobcats share that third slot with tomorrow's opponent, No. 8 Columbus State University, and can finish no lower than fourth.
The Georgia College/CSU matchup comes tomorrow, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
