GREENWOOD, S.C. – The No. 14 Georgia College men's tennis team (14-9) saw its season come to a close Monday, falling 5-0 in the NCAA Southeast Region Tournament #2 final to host and No. 7 Lander University (17-3).
The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. The tightest contest came in the second slot, as Taylor Powell (Martinez, Georgia) and Jannik Kumbier (Neumünster, Germany) were edged 8-6 by Thibaut Leoussoff and Marc Hofer.
In third doubles, Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) and Pedro Ecenarro (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) lost to Benjamin Salle and Samuel Poutignat 8-5. First doubles action posted an 8-3 loss for the No. 18 doubles pairing of Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and Vincent Castermans (Grenoble, France) to No. 3 Adam Jonsson and Loic Minery.
Bearcat momentum continued to singles play, getting victories in the first and fourth singles slots. No. 23 Hass was defeated by Hofer 7-6, 6-4 and Ecenarro dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Leoussoff.
The loss brings a close to the 2015 season for GC men's tennis, a year highlighted by All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Second Team honors for Hass and a PBC Freshman of the Year trophy for Ecenarro. The Bobcats picked up wins over nine nationally-ranked teams this year, including No. 8 Columbus State University.
