MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Sophomore righty Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) had an amazing start and got just enough offense from her Georgia College softball (46-9) teammates to take down Carson-Newman University (37-14) 3-1 in game three of the 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional #2 Saturday.
The No. 2-seed and host Bobcats advance to championship Sunday, May 10 while No. 6-seed Carson-Newman will play a losers bracket contest tonight at 7 p.m.
Lewis buzzed through the Eagle lineup, scattering five hits and allowing one run on a solo home run by Brooke Ramsey in the fourth. Lewis struck out six to improve to 22-4 on the year.
The Bobcats struck first in the first, as rightfielder Abi LeRoy (Dublin) was hit by a pitch, stole second and came in on a double to right from leftfielder Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill). It took a few innings, but Carson-Newman third baseman Ramsey tied it up with a towering blast to left in the fourth.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Georgia College took the lead back with a pair of runs on four hits, including RBI singles from Holland Coursey and designated player Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins).
Eagle starter Sarah Howard (10-5) took the loss in 3 2/3 innings of work. Second baseman Jessica Morgan was 2-for-3 for the Eagles, who limited the big innings for Georgia College, the Bobcats stranding 12 runners.
For the Bobcats, Holland Coursey finished at 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Centerfielder Danielle Bernstein (Cumming) added two hits in four trips, scoring a run.
The win snaps the single-season record for Georgia College of 45, set in the 2006 season, the last time the Bobcats advanced to the World Series.
