First Quarter Hole Sinks GC Women's Basketball at FMU, 70-58

Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Georgia College Women's Basketball team (15-6, 7-5 PBC) won the second and fourth quarters, but a massive 21-6 deficit after the first was too much to overcome in a 70-58 loss at Francis Marion University (17-4, 8-4 PBC) Saturday.

The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Georgia College this season as well as a four-game win streak in the all-time series with FMU.

Junior LaRice Walker (Franklin, Georgia) scored a career-high 24 points, netting a consistent 12 in each half. She finished 9-for-13 from the floor, hit a three and knocked down 5-of-9 at the free-throw line while adding a team-high five assists. Walker's previous high came against Belmont Abbey College at home this season.

Senior Kadesha Gibbs (Claremont, North Carolina) was the only other Bobcat in double digits at 18 points, adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Bobcats were out-shot slightly 46 percent (25-54) to 45 percent (22-49), but the big difference came in rebounding as FMU nearly doubled the Bobcats 40-23. The Patriots led in second-chance points 18-8. Alaysia Watts and Camille Dash shared leading-scorer duties with 15 each, the former added 10 boards for a double-double.

The loss puts Georgia College at 7-5 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, good for third in the West Division. The top four teams advance to the PBC Tournament at the end of February.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m., traveling to Augusta University (16-5, 9-3 PBC). The Jaguars lead the East Division, most recently beating West Division leader Clayton State University tonight 69-56.
