COLUMBUS, Ga. – Georgia College(11-0) ended its final day of softball in Columbus with two more victories. First, they defeated the Bellarmine University Knights9 (5-7) in extra innings for the second time in three days, 5-3. The Bobcats then achieved victory over Lincoln Memorial University (1-5) with a score of 9-3.
The Bobcats began the day with a match against Bellarmine University. Unlike the previous matchup against the Knights, scoring in this game began immediately. The Knights sent a single runner across the plate in the first and third innings while they kept the Bobcats scoreless through the fourth. A sacrifice fly from Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) put the first run on the board for Georgia College in the top of the fifth and the Bobcat comeback began. In the following inning, the Bobcats tied the game at 3-3. An error by the Bellarmine catcher in the ninth allowed two Bobcats to reach home plate and Georgia College took the win, 5-3.
Baylee Hall (Hephizibah), Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill) and Brooks each earned an RBI during play. Hall was the only Bobcat to get to third on a hit, but Abi LeRoy (Dublin) ended the game with two doubles. LeRoy also recorded a stolen base, and teammate Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill) matched that performance with a stolen base of her own.
Pitcher Marisa Boyette (Marietta) kept the second inning scoreless, but reliever Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) would pick up the win after keeping the Knights scoreless for the final four innings. Lewis only gave up one hit while tossing the ball, and got two strikeouts during the contest.
There was no rest for the Bobcats as they had to face off with Lincoln Memorial immediately after their win against the Knights. After a tied first inning, Georgia College turned up the heat, racking up seven runs in the second inning. Lincoln Memorial attempted to recover, but the two runs they scored in the fourth inning were the final ones for the team. Reliever Brooke Taylor (Powder Springs) kept the last three innings scoreless and the Bobcats would end the weekend with another victory, 9-3.
Faith Flanders (Dublin), Shawnda Martin (Calhoun), and Holland Coursey tied for game leader in RBIs with two apiece. Holland Coursey was the only Georgia College player to send a ball over the fence with her home run in the fifth. Brooks would be the only Bobcat to steal a base from the Railsplitters.
Starter Lewis left the mound after she recorded two strikeouts during her three innings of play. She kept innings two and three scoreless and only one error during the game. Reliever Taylor gave up three hits in this afternoon's game, but she managed three scoreless innings with only one walked batter.
The Bobcats return to the field when they take on Belmont Abbey College Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. for their first game in the Catawba Tournament.
