GC Women's Basketball Closes Season in PBC Quarterfinals, 80-74 at Lander

Box Score

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The West No. 4-seed Georgia College Women's Basketball team (16-13) overcame a first quarter deficit at East No. 1-seed Lander University (23-6) in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Quarterfinals, but eventually fell 80-74 Saturday afternoon.

Georgia College led by four at 70-66 with 3:23 left, but Lander closed with a 14-4 run to finish off the Bobcats.

Senior Kadesha Gibbs (Claremont, North Carolina) posted her 10th career double-double in her last game, going for 17 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate Mckenna Rushton (Gainesville, Georgia) also closed her career with a great effort, scoring 14 points with five boards.

Junior guards LaRice Walker (Franklin, Georgia) and Lindsey Reed (Stockbridge, Georgia) each helped power the offense, Walker with 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds, and Reed totaling 16 points and six assists.

Lander did a great job working its way to the free-throw line, shooting 16 more from the charity stripe than the Bobcats.

The Bobcats had vastly different efforts in each of the first two quarters, dropping the first quarter 33-14 before rebounding with a 23-7 win in the second, powered by the Georgia College zone defense. Reed led the Bobcats at the half with 10 points, while Gibbs nearly had a double-double already at eight points and 10 boards.

Lander was led by 29 points from Mylea McKenith, a frequent visitor to the free-throw line, hitting 13-for-18 from that spot. Breshay Johnson added a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double.

The loss brings a close to the 2015-16 season for Bobcat Women's Basketball, a 16-13 effort and the team's fourth-straight trip to the PBC Tournament. After a loss in the season-opener, Georgia College rattled off a school-record 13-game win streak.
