ANDERSON, S.C. – No. 9 Georgia College Softball (6-0) battled their way to two wins against Anderson University (S.C.) (3-3) on the road Saturday. The Bobcats defeated Anderson 5-2 and 3-1.
After a strong opening weekend, the Bobcats kept their momentum going for their first road victories of the season and dishing up two losses to the Trojans.
The Bobcats struck first scoring a run in the second inning after junior Faith Flanders (Dublin, Georgia) crushed a double and crossed home plate from a hit by sophomore Hannah Coursey (Sugar Hill, Georgia). Anderson countered the early Bobcat lead scorning two runs in the third.
With the game tied up at two going into the sixth inning, Hannah Coursey and her twin sister sophomore Holland Coursey (Sugar Hill, Georgia) teamed up with classmate Baylee Hall (Hephzibah, Georgia) to start a strong late-innings push, scoring Hannah and tying up the game. Hall recorded the RBIs on the score.
The Bobcats pushed it further out of reach in the seventh inning off a RBI double from Kristen Brooks (Brunswick, Georgia) and a single RBI from Flanders to bring Brooks in for the score would close out the first match with the Bobcats on top.
Senior Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Georgia) improved to 3-0 with nine strikeouts and just two runs over seven innings.
The second game saw a defensive battle in a low-scoring game on both sides. Anderson plated one in the bottom of the first, and Georgia College retaliated in the top of the second. Flanders cranked another double to bring Emily Roberston (Dacula, Georgia) in for the tie.
The early scores were the only runs tallied until extra innings. It came down to the ninth until the Bobcats would bring out their Trojan horse and defeat Anderson.
In the top of the ninth, after Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins, Georgia) got on base, Caroline Snider (Tennille, Georgia) came in as a pinch runner. Bobcat catcher Lacy Najafi (Suwanee, Georgia) cranked a single to center advancing Snider to third. Flanders would continue her big night after dropping a double down the line. Snider strolled home to score and the Trojans' left fielder added an error, allowing Najafi to push the lead up by two.
Anderson would not score on their last attempt in the bottom of the ninth. Carly Lewis (Seymour, Tennessee) continued to bring the heat throwing a complete game, only giving up four hits and striking out eleven Trojans.
The Bobcats take the field next at the Cougar Classic Tournament Feb. 12-14. Play begins with the Bobcats against Bellarmine College Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.
