MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 8 Georgia College Softball (24-8, 3-3 PBC) team dropped both games in its home doubleheader to Armstrong State University (18-8, 2-2, PBC) 11-6 and 8-2 Friday at the Peeler Complex.
The atmosphere at the Peeler Complex for the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match up today was electric as the Bobcats and Pirates clashed in a rematch from last year's conference semi-final. This game saw a different outcome as the Pirates struck down Georgia College.
Armstrong's squad set the tempo early with a home run in first inning to score the only run for both sides in the first four frames. In the fourth the Pirates berated the Bobcats with four more runs to pump their lead up to five.
The Bobcat offense mounted a come back in the fourth and fifth innings with six runs of their own, tying the game up. Third baseman Kristen Brooks (Brunswick) logged the first run for the Bobcats with a single through the left side and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Holland Coursey (Powder Springs) ripped a single up the middle scoring her identical twin sister Hannah Coursey (Powder Springs) for the second and final Georgia College run in the fourth.
In the fifth inning the Bobcats started to look really sharp from the plate, scoring four runs. Hannah Coursey had an RBI reaching base on a fielders choice and scoring Taylor Campbell (Warner Robins). Danielle Bernstein (Suwanee) scored Abi LeRoy (Dublin) with a RBI single to centerfield. Bernstein and Hannah Coursey rounded the bags off a throwing error to score the tying runs.
The Bobcat comeback wasn't enough to slow the Pirates' Roll. Armstrong scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to edge off the Bobcats and take game one.
The Bobcats threw three pitchers at Armstrong, Marissa Boyette (Marietta), Brooke Taylor (Powder Springs) and Carly Lewis (Seymour Tennessee), but were unable to stop the Pirate batters.
The second game started off almost exactly the same of game one, with an Armstrong home run.
The Bobcats answered the Pirates early 2-0 led with a run in the first. Hall made her way on base after being hit by a pitch, and eventually scored off a wild pitch. Armstrong's offense used the momentum from game one and the early home run to score six more runs to the Georgia College two by the seventh inning.
Stellar defense and out of the park pitching from the Pirates kept the Bobcats hitless till the sixth inning. LeRoy put the first hit on the board with a double to leftfield and scored off a RBI single from Brooks. Brooks's RBI was the last stretch of energy for the Bobcats before they were depleted 8-2 by Armstrong.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, March 20 against Flagler College at home in doubleheader play. The first pitch is set for noon.
