Bobcat Women's Basketball Outlasts Montevallo, 70-62

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Basketball team (10-5, 4-4 PBC) out-lasted a late rally from the University of Montevallo (4-13, 1-9 PBC) Saturday afternoon to pick up the Bobcats' 10th win of the season, 70-62.

Not even a Baldwin County Tornado Warning could slow down the scoring early, as both teams jumped out with a 20-plus first quarter efforts, the Bobcats edging the Falcons 23-20. The third quarter provided the difference, as the GC Women doubled up their counterparts 18-6. Senior LaRice Walker (Franklin) had little trouble getting to the hoop all afternoon, tallying eight of her 20 points in that deciding quarter.

Walker's 20 led all scorers, as she shot 8-for-12 from the field, grabbed six boards and tallied a team-high four assists. Sophomore Sydney Cleveland (Gainesville) added 13 points, including three from long range, while classmate Ana Anderson (Sharpsburg) responded well to a rare start, narrowly missing a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Senior Veronica Ryan (Clearwater, Florida) chipped in 12 points, hitting half of her six shots from long-distance.

The Bobcats out-shot the Falcons 40 percent (21-52) to 36 percent (23-64) from the field, and owned a 43-35 advantage on the glass.

The 20-point game was the seventh of Walker's career, coming just four points shy of her career high. The senior is just three points shy of becoming the 14th 1,000-point scorer in school history.

The win evens Georgia College's record in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play to 4-4, good for fifth in the West Division. The top four advance to the PBC Tournament at the end of February.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m., traveling to Young Harris College.
