Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A stingy defense and great shooting provided the engine for the Georgia College Women's Basketball team (9-3, 3-2 PBC) in a 72-47 rout of defending NCAA Southeast Region Champion Francis Marion University (7-7, 2-3 PBC) Monday night in the Centennial Center.
Down 13-12 after the first, the Bobcats controlled the final three frames, including a 21-11 fourth quarter for the victory. Georgia College allowed just 24 percent shooting in the second half, and held the Patriots to just 30 percent (17-57) overall.
Georgia College shot 54.2 percent (26-48) from the field, the team's best effort this season, and the most since shooting 54.4 percent in a win over the Patriots Dec. 15, 2012.
Sophomore Ana Anderson (Sharpsburg) came off the bench for a team-best 14 points. She had a near-perfect night, going 6-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, adding six rebounds as well.
A pair of 13-point games came from fellow forwards Alyah McGriff (Suwanee) and Ta'Asia Wright (Denmark, South Carolina) as the three-member frontcourt combined for 40 of the team's 72 points. McGriff and Wright shared the team-high with seven rebounds each, McGriff adding three assists, while Wright had a pair of steals.
The Bobcat predictably dominated points in the paint 34-12, and held a 28-8 advantage in bench points as well. After some back-and-forth early, the Bobcats took the lead 22-20 on a Anderson jumper at the 5:33 mark in the second quarter, and wouldn't surrender it for the remainder of the contest.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m., playing host to No. 21 University of North Georgia (12-2, 4-1 PBC). The Nighthawks most recently lost at home to USC Aiken 66-62 tonight.
