MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – No. 19 Georgia College Women's Tennis (2-2, 2-1 PBC) got its second straight victory of the three-game weekend Sunday. The Bobcats topped Lander University (4-1, 2-1 PBC) thanks in part to a tremendous three-hour battle and victory in Macy Polk's (Powder Springs) line one of singles.
The Bobcat ladies started singles after gaining a solid 2-1 lead after the doubles score. Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville) and Emma Niemi (Cumming) got the quickest win of the day, routing their doubles opponent in line one, 8-1 and Kristen Jones (Marietta) and Camilla Negrini (Milan, Italy) followed suit with an 8-2 victory in the third spot. The Bearcats' Yuriko Ono and Nelli Luis snagged Lander's first point of the day against Polk and Hannah Serdinia (Suwanee) in the second flight, 8-2.
Georgia College got another quick two points in singles action. Kelly stopped Caroline Yodice at 6-3 and 6-0, while Serdinia took down Nelli Luis on the back court with a pair of 6-3 sets.
Niemi and Negrini fell in both the fifth and third spots, respectively. Ivanca Mocic secured another Lander point with a pair of 6-4 set victories over Negrini. Julia Suzuki topped Niemi with a 6-3, 6-2 Bearcat win.
The Blue and Green secured its second consecutive victory with Polk's major win over Ono in the first line. Ono snagged the first set, 6-3, but Polk rallied back for a second set 6-4 win to split the match. Polk finally won after a close to three-hour fight with a 6-2 third set victory.
Isabella Schulz got Lander's fourth point against Jones. Jones won the first set 6-3 but retired the fourth set at a 4-1 Bearcat lead.
The Bobcats look to extend their win streak as they host No. 8 Columbus State University Friday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
