Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The number '10' was the magic one Saturday at the Peeler Complex, as Georgia College Softball (27-15, 13-5 PBC) split action with Lander University (18-28, 6-14 PBC), dropping the first game 10-2 and winning game two 10-7.
In game one, after single runs for Lander in the second-through-fourth and a two-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth for Georgia College, the Bobcats trailed just 3-2 heading into the final inning. Lander put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a massive seven-run tally for the 10-2 final.
McKenzi Ferguson held the Bobcat bats largely in check for the game, surrendering just five hits for a pair of runs and fanning seven. Senior Faith Flanders (Dublin) and junior Baylee Hall (Hephzibah) tallied the only RBIs for the game, Flanders on her first career triple.
Sophomore Kayla Price (Indian Land, South Carolina) took the loss in 5 2/3 innings of work, despite allowing just two earned runs.
Game two was a back and forth affair, with Georgia College jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three, but Lander taking over 5-4 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom half, the Bobcats responded with three runs to tip the scale in Georgia College's favor for good.
Hall was a huge factor in game two, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, flanked by a 2-for-4 effort from junior Deja Lester (Jacksonville) with two runs scored. Seniors Flanders and Cassidy Rice (Du Quoin, Illinois) had two hits and an RBI each. Price got the win in relief, improving to 16-4 with 2 2/3 innings of work.
The afternoon of action served as Senior Day for GC Softball, as the Bobcats honored Flanders, Rice and centerfielder Danielle Bernstein (Cumming), as well as Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Foster Deariso between the two contests.
The split puts Georgia College at 13-5, good for third in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings, one behind first place in the loss column. The top eight teams advance to the PBC Tournament at the Peeler Complex April 21-22.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, April 9 at 2 p.m. for the final regular-season home doubleheader of the year against USC Aiken.
