GC Women's Tennis Takes First Conference Match of 2019

PEACH BELT STANDINGS

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Powered by more strong singles play, the Georgia College Women's Tennis team (4-2, 1-0 PBC) beat Augusta University (5-3, 0-2 PBC) 6-1 Monday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility, the Bobcats winning their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) game of the year for the second-straight season.

GC Women's Tennis took the doubles point, winning the first and third slots.

Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) and Emma Fleming (Suwanee) teamed for the first time, getting a 6-2 win over Eva Miralles-Miro and Marie Cantenot in the first flight. In the third slot, the freshman duo of Irina Birklich (Atlanta) and Jordan Bowie (Macon) topped Maria Alice Viera and Alejandra Arranz 6-2.

The second doubles squad came short of the sweep, as sophomores Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) and Kim Yatribi (Frejus, France) lost to Merye Gobernate and Ana Faria 6-4.

Lopez ended her day early, buzzing through Faria in the second slot 6-1, 6-0. Lopez moves to a team-best 5-1 on the year. Fellow senior Paula Garriga (Barcelona, Spain) added to the advantage with a pair of 6-2 sets against Cantenot in the fifth slot. Richter nabbed a win in first singles, taking out Miralles-Miro 6-1, 7-5 to give the Bobcats the fourth team point, clinching the win. Both Garriga and Richter have four singles wins this season.

With the team match already decided, Yatribi bounced Gobernate with a 6-4, 6-0 score, improving to 4-2. The lone blemish in the singles run came next, when Flemming fell in a 2-6, 6-4, 13-11 marathon to Arranz in the fourth slot. Bowie closed out the day 7-5, 6-2 in sixth singles, beating Viera. Bowie is now 4-1 on her freshman campaign.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m., traveling to No. 13 University of North Georgia.
