MACON, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Tennis team (0-1) stumbled in its season opener Saturday, dropping a 7-0 bout at Division I Mercer University (2-4).
The Bears swept doubles play with a couple of tight bouts. In the second slot, Lukas Zavrel (Ulvano, Czech Republic) and Jack Sorel (Alpharetta) took Mercer to the limit, as Andrew Branicki and Samuel MacLeod escaped with a 7-5 win. Things were equally tight in the third slot, where Sebastian Nunez (Buford) and Jorge Robinson (Entre Rios, Argentina) were edged 6-4 by Michael Durham and Samuel Barrow.
In first doubles, the team of Matt Rogel (Sautron, France) and Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) lost a 6-3 bout to Hugo Lobo and Lucas Wayenburg.
The first singles result came in the second slot, where Jesus Villamizar Abia (Venezuela) was shut out by Wayenburg. Mercer extended it's lead to 3-0 with a third singles win, as Zavrel was shut out by Carver Arant. The Bears clinched the team victory in the first slot, a pair of 6-2 sets and a loss for Rogel to Lobo.
In fourth singles, Sorel put up another fight, falling 6-4, 6-2 to MacLeod. Next came a 6-2, 6-1 loss for Cole Heller (Woodstock) to Durham at sixth singles. The day wrapped up in the fifth slot, as Robinson dropped a tough 6-2, 6-4 matchup with David Georgadze.
