MACON, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team (0-1) had a tall task in their season opener, dropping a 7-0 bout at Division I Mercer University (2-2) Saturday.
Doubles play provided a Mercer sweep. The closest action came in the first slot, where Emma Fleming (Suwanee) and Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) battled Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville to a 6-2 loss.
In second doubles Kim Yatribi (Frejus, France) and Jordan Bowie (Macon) lost to Alara Hollyfield and Lekha Varudandi, 6-1. The third doubles pairing of Emily Pope (Canton) and Ashton Morrison (Cumming) lost to Lauren Rich and Ashley Popham by shutout.
In first singles, Richter had the tightest matchup of the day, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Roquebert. Second singles brought a tough 6-2, 6-3 loss for Yatribi to Hollyfield. In the third slot, Fleming came up short to Courville 6-4, 6-1.
Fourth singles posted a 6-1, 6-3 loss for Bowie to Rich. In the fifth slot, Morrison dropped her 6-2, 6-1 bout to Varudandi and Pope lost in sixth singles to Popham by shutout.
