Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College Softball team (0-2) lost both ends of a home opener to Newberry College (2-0) Sunday, falling 6-4 and 11-1 at the Peeler Complex.
The Bobcats dropped the first game after a thrilling comeback, posting four runs in the sixth to force extra innings. Sophomore pitcher MacKenzie Michels (Lilburn) went the distance throwing 145 pitches over nine innings in the loss.
Down 4-0 heading into the sixth, the Bobcats got a trio of run-scoring singles, and tied the game on a fielder's choice. After a couple of scoreless extra frames, the Wolves pulled back in front with two in the top of the ninth, both coming on RBI singles of their own.
During the first matchup, GC had a sole multi-hit player in redshirt freshman Sadie Waters (Cumming) with two singles. Waters also knocked in one of the four runs in the game.
Junior Haley Howell (Rochelle) drove in a run with a single to center in the sixth, tying GC Hall of Famer Keidra Baitey (2007) for sixth in school history with her 111th career RBI.
The second matchup of the doubleheader also went to the Wolves out-scoring GC, 11-1. The lone Bobcat run of the game came from a long double off the base of the fence in center from freshman Samantha Vinson (Jefferson). The RBI double was one of two in the game for Vinson, as she finished 3-for-3 in game two, tallying half of the team's hits.
The pitching duties for this game were double teamed by junior transfer Holly Phillips (Macon) and freshman Golden Thrower (Hanahan, South Carolina). Phillips took the loss in her first appearance as a Bobcat.
The Georgia College Softball team is back in action Friday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina to take on Erskine College in the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic at Lander University.
