PEMBROKE, N.C. – The No. 8 Georgia College Baseball team (8-5, 7-5 PBC) lost both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at No. 14 UNC Pembroke (11-5, 9-3 PBC) 6-5 and 11-5.
The Bobcats were upended in game one, leading 5-4 into the ninth. In the final at-bat, the Braves got a two-out RBI single to tie it, then another single from second baseman River Ryan to win the game.
GC got a grand slam from rightfielder Paul Grazzini (Marietta, Georgia) as part of a five-run second inning to jump in front. The home run was Grazzini's second this year. First baseman Ben Tuten (Bristol, Georgia) was 2-for-3 with a run, as was leftfielder Jay Saunders (Moultrie, Georgia). Third baseman Noah Mendlinger (Alpharetta, Georgia) added two singles in four trips.
Starter Bryce Bowen (Bowman, Georgia) went five innings, allowing three runs and fanning six. Reliever Brennan Crooms (Metter, Georgia) took the loss (1-2) in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Game two was a tight 7-5 affair until a four-run eighth pushed it out of reach. The Bobcats took leads in the first and second innings, but saw them both erased quickly. GC was held scoreless for the final seven innings.
Second baseman Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia) swatted a home run and a double as part of a big 3-for-5 game two, driving in four and scoring once. The home run was Gentry's fourth of the season and 12th in his career. Tuten again went 2-for-3 with a run, while Saunders had another two singles in four at-bats.
Righty reliver Garrett Houston (Macon, Georgia) was the hard-luck loser in game two, allowing just two runs over four strong innings of relief. Houston (0-1) finished with six hits and five walks, but did fan four.
