GC Men's Tennis Drops First Conference Match of Season, 6-1

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College Men's Tennis team (2-3, 0-1 PBC) stumbled in an upset bid at No. 19 Flagler College (4-5, 2-0 PBC) Saturday by a 6-1 score.

The Flagler Saints swept doubles action to start the day. Second doubles finished first, as junior Lukas Zavrel (Ulvano, Czech Republic) and freshman Sebastian Nunez (Buford, Georgia) teamed for a 6-3 loss to Philipp Lemken and Halil Aydogdu.

Junior Cole Heller (Woodstock, Georgia) and sophomore Jack Sorel (Alpharetta, Georgia) followed suit with a 6-3 loss in the third slot to Nikita Tatyanin and Cedric Holzmann. The closest bout came in the first slot, where senior Matt Rogel (Sautron, France) and freshman Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) fell to Rasmus Jonsson and Slobodan Cejovic 6-4.

The Saints moved to 2-0 with a win in first singles, where Rogel dropped 6-3 and 6-2 sets to Tatyanin. Next came third singles, a loss for Sorel to Lemken 6-1, 6-4. Flagler then clinched the team victory in the fourth slot, as Jesus Villamizar Abia (Venezuela) lost to Holzmann 6-1, 6-3.

In the sixth slot, Sergi fell to Aydogdu in a three-set battle 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Next came a finish in the second slot, as Jorge Robinson (Entre Rios, Argentina) took Jonsson to the limit 6-2, 7-6, 10-4. Zavrel helped stave off the shutout with a three-set victory in the fifth slot to close the day. The Bobcat took the first set from Max Berner 6-4, but then dropped the second 3-6. A 10-7 tiebreak finished off the day in Zavrel's favor. He evens out his singles record at 2-2 on the year.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m., hosting No. 7 Valdosta State University for non-conference play.
