COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Georgia College soccer team (1-2) got a late goal but couldn't find an equalizer to force overtime, falling 2-1 at Columbus State University (3-1) Thursday.
The Cougars led at the half 1-0 after a penalty kick strike from Vanessa Aviles. Things were pretty even at the half, CSU out-shooting the Bobcats 3-2.
In the second half, CSU took a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute on another penalty kick goal from Aviles, her first two goals of the season.
In the 86th minute, senior Cassie Balzano (Douglasville) gathered a muffed clear by the CSU defense and found an empty net for her second goal of the year. Now the Bobcats needed to find a tying strike in the final 4:21. The Bobcats managed three shots over that time frame, including one on target by Madi Britt (Statham), but were unsuccessful in tying the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Richardson (Marietta) made six saves in the loss.
