GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team (2-3) dropped a tough 4-3 battle at NAIA national power Brenau University (3-1) Tuesday.
The Bobcats have now battled teams from three different divisions, NCAA Division I Mercer University, NAIA No. 7 Brenau and multiple NCAA Division II teams.
The GC Women dropped the doubles point, but got a win in the first slot. There, Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) and Emma Fleming (Suwanee) teamed for a shutout of Juana Zambrano and Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul.
In second doubles, GC's Kim Yatribi (Frejus, France) and Jordan Bowie (Macon) lost 7-6 to MaryWynn Brannon and Bianca Andersen. Brenau got the third slot as well, Emily Pope (Canton) and Ashton Morrison (Cumming) losing to Sally Brannon and Valentina Pabon.
Yatribi brought the match even with a win in the second slot to start singles play, shutting out Evelin Gouveia. A loss in first singles put Brenau back in front, as Richter lost to Zambrano 6-1, 6-2. The Golden Tigers moved to a 3-1 lead with a Bobcat loss in sixth singles. Pope couldn't get past Sally Brannon 6-1, 6-2.
Next came a finish in third singles, as Fleming beat MaryWynn Brannon in a pair of 6-3 sets. Bowie then brought the match even at 3-3 by beating Pabon 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth slot. With the match on the line, Morrison gave Andersen everything she could handle in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to close the day.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 12 at 1 p.m., traveling to Savannah State University for non-conference play.
