MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Softball team (9-15, 1-5 PBC) nabbed its first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) win this season in a doubleheader split with 2021 NCAA Tournament Qualifier Young Harris College (10-10, 3-3 PBC) Sunday at the Peeler Complex. The Bobcats rebounded from a 6-4 loss to take game two 3-2.
Young Harris got five of their six runs over the final three innings in game one, with the Bobcats putting together a rally in their final at-bat, but coming short.
Down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, catcher Lauren Sommerer (Loganville) ripped a double to center that scored the first run of the inning. Two batters later, centerfielder MacKenzie Hoffman (Rocky Face) doubled in two runs, but was cut down trying to take third. A walk then put the tying run at the plate, but YHC escaped with the win.
Lefty starter Golden Thrower (Hanahan, South Carolina) took the loss but pitched well, scattering seven hits and three walks for just two runs over her 4 2/3 innings of work. Thrower (2-4) fanned three.
Rightfielder Eliza Kuhne (Sharpsburg) had the team's lone multi-hit game with a pair of singles in four trips, scoring a run.
Game two saw all of its scoring action early, as both teams were held scoreless from the top of the fourth for the remainder of the game. Bobcat reliever Macy Banks (Homer) was lights-out, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless. She allowed just two hits, didn't walk any and struck out seven in the win (4-6). Banks set them down in order in the fourth and sixth innings.
Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the second, a Jessica Owens (Social Circle) solo home run tied the game. GC then took the lead on an RBI single from Ashley Schell (Cumming). After YHC tied it up again at 2-2, Owens put the Bobcats ahead for good in the bottom of the third, doubling home Brooke Lougher (Suwanee), who walked.
Hoffman was 2-for-3 in game two with a triple. Owens finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs and a run.
GC Softball is back in action Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m., traveling to Francis Marion University for a doubleheader.
