COLUMBUS, Ga. – An upset bid was not to be for No. 6-seed Georgia College Men's Tennis (6-10), falling 4-0 to No. 3-seed University of North Georgia (14-5) in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament Friday at Columbus State University.
The Nighthawks took the doubles point with wins in the first and second slots. Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) and Sebastian Nunez (Buford) teamed for a 6-1 loss on the first line to Joaquin Benoit and Ryan Gaskin, the national No. 34 duo. Second doubles brought another 6-1 defeat, this time for Gabriel Cizek (Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic) and Jesus Villamizar Abia (Valencia, Venezuela) to the nation's No. 30 pairing in Daniel Ostap and Cole Brainard.
UNG ran the table on the first three singles finishes. Sergi fell to Giulio Sassi in the sixth slot by shutout to get things started. Next came a loss for Cizek in second singles, falling to Gaskin 6-2, 6-1. The match came to a close in first singles, as PBC Freshman of the Year and All-PBC Second Team pick Karol Malirz (Marbella, Spain) fell to national No. 10 Benoit 6-1, 6-4.
