COLUMBUS, Ga. – A late surge by the Georgia College Baseball team (33-19) wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit, as the Bobcats fell to Young Harris College (37-17) 10-6 in a winners' bracket contest at the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament Saturday.
The No. 2-seed Bobcats will be back in action tonight, May 14 at 7 p.m., taking on the winner of the losers' bracket matchup between No. 1-seed and host Columbus State University and No. 3-seed Georgia Southwestern State University. No. 4-seed YHC advances to championship Sunday.
The Bobcats spotted the Mountain Lions a 10-0 advantage as YHC came out of the blocks hot, a run each in the first and third, then a five-run fourth really made things difficult. The big fourth inning was buoyed by a three-run home run from YHC's Noah Fitzgerald.
GC began the comeback trail with two runs in the seventh. There, the Bobcats got solo home runs from shortstop KC Brown (Savannah) – his third of the last two games – and catcher Sam Sly (Atlanta). The Bobcats scratched across another on a groundout in the eighth to trail 10-3.
In the ninth, a pair of doubles by Cam Hill (Marietta) and Mason Spivey (Appling) separated by an out brought in one for GC. Later, Rightfielder Paul Grazzini (Marietta) plated Spivey on a single through the right side. Brown later drove in another run with a single, but the rally would stop there. GC had the game's tying run on deck when the game came to a close.
Grazzini finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, while Brown had a 2-for-4 effort, driving in two and scoring once. The home run was Brown's 12th this season. Hill, Spivey and leftfielder David Julian (Dunwoody) each had two hits. All three scored runs, and Spivey drove in one with that ninth-inning double.
Lefty starter Jacob Hester (Marietta) managed three innings in the loss (5-2), allowing a pair of runs on four hits. Freshman righty Aidan McConnell (Roswell) kept the Bobcats close with three shutout innings, scattering a pair of hits and a walk, and fanning three.
The Bobcats now take on the winner of the elimination matchup between CSU and GSW tonight at 7 p.m.
