AIKEN, S.C.- The
Georgia College & State University volleyball team took down the University of South Carolina-Aiken 3-1 to nab the first Peach Belt Conference win of the 2023 season Friday (Oct. 13) evening at the Convocation Center.
GCSU improved to 11-11 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while USCA fell to 12-5 and 2-4. The Bobcats will take a break from conference play to take on Carson-Newman University Saturday (Oct. 14) at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats picked up their first set win of PBC play in the first set of the match at a 25-23 win. They kept the Pacers more at bay in the second set with a 25-19 win. USCA extended the match taking the third set 25-18. The Bobcats sat down the Pacers with a third set 25-20 win and took the match 3-1. Through the four set match the Bobcats hit .216 as a team.
The GCSU offense was unstoppable with two players having kills in the double digits and another with nine.
Rachel Machovec had the hot arm leading the offense with 18 kills leading to her 11th double-double of the season.
Camryn Carlton had the second most kills on the team with 10 good for her career high.
Abby Infante also picked up her career high in kills with nine as the teams third kill leader.
Cadence Spilotros and
Mary Kate Kotzin contributed to the hot offense of the Bobcats adding six kills and five kills respectively. Setter
Riese Johnson had a stellar performance picking up 47 of the 51 assists in the road win.
The Bobcat defense played with a dig or die mentality as they had 75 as a team and four players with digs in the double digits. Machovec added to her already impressive night leading the team with 20 digs.
Callie Miller had the second most on the team with 16 just missing her season high of 17. Libero
Olivia Alvarez was right behind Miller picking up 15 digs in the conference win. Johnson nabbed her 10th double-double of the season adding 10 digs to a stellar night.
Kyeli Hazzard added eight digs to the Bobcat win which is her career high.
The great wall of Bobcats struck against the Pacers in the four set win as the squad picked up 10 block assists and a solo block. Infante had an outstanding night at the net picking up three block assists and the lone solo block. Machovec was the teams second leading blocker with two and five other Bobcats added one each.
