MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Sara Schultz's goal with 4:33 remaining was the difference as the Georgia College & State women's soccer team upset No. 1 Catawba College 2-1 in a non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats improved to 8-6-2 after taking down the No. 1 ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, while the Catawba Indians suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 14-1-0. GCSU closes out the regular season Saturday (Oct. 28) with a 1 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match against Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Georgia College opened the scoring just 67 seconds into the match off an
Abbey Eison goal that went through the legs of the Catawba defender and into the left corner of the goal to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. Eison's third goal of the 2023 campaign was set up by a pass from teammate
Sarah Mason.
The Catawba Indians tied the match at 1 less than four minutes later as Sydney Jimmo scored her 17th goal of the season on a penalty kick after a Catawba player was fouled in the box.
It would stay that way for the next 80 minutes, until Schultz took a pass from
Morgan Amrozowicz, got past her defender and knocked the ball into the left side of the net from 20 yards out to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead with 4:33 remaining. It was Schultz's third strike of the year.
Catawba outshot Georgia College 18-9, but each team had seven shots on goal. The Catawba Indians collected nine corner kicks to four for the Bobcats.
Kassidy Fortin turned away six shots in the GCSU goal.
