MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University Women's Tennis team (4-0) won a battle of the unbeatens Sunday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility, taking down Newberry College (7-1) with a 5-2 team score.
The Bobcats got the doubles point with wins in the second and third slots. In No. 2 doubles, Ashton Morrison (Cumming) and Jada Young (Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) teamed to beat Sofia Cardenas and Rosie Harfield, 6-1.
Third doubles saw Sofia Shing (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shradha Chhabra (New Delhi, India) beat Aina Miralles and Hazel Vernon, 6-3. First doubles was a 6-3 score as well, with Emma Fleming (Suwanee) and Chiara Santoro (Santa Ursula, Spain) losing to Zulay Castaneda and Nastassia Chamoun.
Singles results began in the third slot, where Fleming beat Ish Singh quickly 6-2, 6-1. The Bobcat senior is now 3-0 this year. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead after Santoro beat Cardenas 6-4, 6-3 in fourth singles. Santoro owns a 4-0 singles record. Next, the Wolves got on the board, as Young fell to Chamoun in second singles 7-6[5], 6-1.
Newberry brought the team score to 3-2 with the next finish, a 6-3, 6-3 loss for Chhabra to Miralles. Shing then clinched the team victory with a marathon win over Castaneda in the first slot, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Is now 4-0 in singles play this season. Morrison closed out the day with a three-set win of her own, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6[4]. Morrison moves to 3-1 this year.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m., traveling to Division I Mercer University.
