ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College & State University Baseball team (3-8, 2-1 PBC) lost a close one in the final matchup of their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) series this season, dropping a 2-1 bout at Flagler College (1-12, 1-5 PBC). The Bobcats still took the overall series from the Saints, two games to one.
The Saints got a single run each in the third and the fifth, and the Bobcats responded to the 2-0 deficit in the seventh.
Second baseman Palmer Sapp (Dawsonville, Georgia) led off the seventh with a double, eventually coming in on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Dominic Arienzo (Madison, Georgia). An attempted squeeze play came up empty in the next at-bat, cutting down the lead runner at the plate. GCSU put the game-tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but couldn't get a clutch hit to bring him in.
The Saints spoiled a marvelous pitching duo today for the Bobcats. Davis Swenson (Toccoa, Georgia) got the start and went the first four, scattering five hits and a walk for just a single run. Swenson (0-2) also struck out four. Freshman John Raines (Powder Springs, Georgia) spun the final four innings, matching just the single run, on just two hits while not walking a batter and fanning two.
The hitting star was Sapp, going 2-for-4 with the double and run scored. Third baseman Ben Tuten (Bristol, Georgia) also had a pair of singles in four trips.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 1 at 5 p.m., playing host to the University of West Georgia.
