COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 12 Georgia College & State University Women's Tennis team (19-3) made short work of Augusta University (10-13) in the opening round of the 2023 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament Friday at Columbus State University.
The No. 3-seed Bobcats advance to take on No. 2-seed University of North Georgia. The tournament effort has finished for the No. 6-seed Jaguars.
The Bobcats got the doubles point with wins on the second and third lines. In second doubles, the All-PBC Second Team pairing of Ashton Morrison (Cumming) and Jada Young (Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) beat Andrea Gonzalez and Priscilla Landi, 6-2. Young and Morrison are now 16-5 this season.
In third doubles, Sofia Shing (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shradha Chhabra (New Delhi, India) won over Carlota Costa and Silvana Figueroa, 6-1. The Bobcat third-line pairing is a team-best 19-2.
The singles sweep began in the second slot, as All-PBC Second Team selection Young improved to 13-6 by beating Gonzalez 7-5, 6-1. Shing wrapped up her match in first singles a minute later, as the All-PBC First Team choice beat Madeline Frediani in a pair of 6-2 sets. Shing is now 18-4 in singles play this year.
The match-clinching victory came from the sixth line, where Chhabra topped Costa 7-5, 6-2. Chhabra runs her singles record to 17-4.
The 19 wins for GCSU Women's Tennis are the most since 2016, when the Bobcats finished 20-9.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, April 22 at 3 p.m. against North Georgia.
