Bobcat volleyball picks up first win of the King era 3-1

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- The Georgia College & State volleyball team took a 3-1 victory over Albany State University, good for head coach Abigail King's first win in the green and blue. 

GCSU improved to 1-0, while the Golden Rams fell to 0-2. The Bobcats are back in action for day two of the Bobcat Classic Tournament Saturday (Sept. 1). They will face Young Harris College at 1 p.m. and Southern Wesleyan University at 5 p.m.

The Bobcats showed superb offense through the four-set contest having two players swing for double digits. In her first game in the GCSU uniform, Rosa Fisher (Canton) led the squad with 12 kills while also hitting .545. Veteran Mary Kate Kotzin (Dunwoody) had the second most kills with 10. Riese Johnson (Cumming) had the hot hands leading the team with 34 assists.

GCSU played with a a dig or die mentality having three players dig double digits. Fisher nabbed the first double-double of her young career with 13 most good for second most on the team. Libero Alanis Bernis (Auburn) led the team in digs with 17. Bernis also added four assists to her box score. Another freshman made a name for herself with 10 digs on the evening in Cadence Spilotros (Powder Springs). She also added four kills to her name. 

The first set of the match went in favor of the Golden Rams 25-23. Once the Bobcats got their feet under them they were unstoppable taking both the second and third sets at 25-18. GCSU brought the thunder in the fourth and final set picking up the 25-7 set win to bring home the match victory. The fourth set included a stellar hitting performance from the team as they hit .550 collectively.
