GCSU closes out Bobcat Classic with two wins

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University volleyball team closed out their Bobcat Classic with two wins Saturday (Sept. 2) afternoon inside the Centennial Center.

The Bobcats improved to 3-0 with their straight-set victory - 25-8, 25-11, and 25-13 - over former Peach Belt Conference-foe Young Harris College in the morning before recorded a 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19 result over Southern Wesleyan University.

Georgia College improved to 3-0 with the sweep. The Bobcats return to the Centennial Center Wednesday (Sept. 6) when they entertain Emmanuel (Ga.) University at 6 p.m. Prior to the match, Georgia College will host its Tailgate Tour beginning at 4 p.m.

The Bobcats wasted little time with the Mountain Lions as the match lasted just 66 minutes. GCSU hit .500 and had 45 kills in just 80 swings, while just committing five errors.The Bobcats recorded a .654 kill percentage in the second set against YHC as they collected 17 kills without an error in 26 attempts. Meanwhile the Bobcat defense gave the Mountain Lions fits as YHC hit -.030 for the match.

Rosa Fisher led the Bobcats with 13 kills, while Mary Kate Kotzin and Rachel Machovec post eight apiece. Riese Johnson distributed 27 assists while recording eight digs. Alanis Bernis led GSU with 16 digs and Olivia Alvarez collected eight more. Georgia College collected 13 team blocks with Kotzin tallying seven and Brooke Roberts adding six. Fisher and Machovec contributed four each.

In the Classic finale, the Bobcats got off to a slow start as they dropped the opening set before hitting .308 over the final three sets. Machovec led the way with 16 kills, while Abby Infante, Fisher and Callie Miller had eight apiece. Lilly Swanson (26) and Johnson (19) combined for 45 assists. Four different Bobcats - Machovec (17), Bernis (15), Johnson (14) and Alvarez (11) - posted double figures in digs. Against the Warriors, GCSU accumulated 14 team blocks.  Camryn Carlton had seven, Infante added five more, while Kotzin and Roberts had four apiece.
