ATLANTA | The Georgia College & State University volleyball team picked up a three-set win over Clark Atlanta University and fell in four sets to Talladega College Tuesday (Sept. 26) afternoon at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
The first match was a clean sweep by the Bobcats over CAU. GCSU took set one 25-19, the second set 25-18 and solidified the win with a 25-10 third set.
Rosa Fisher led the offense with eight kills on the afternoon. Madeline Gilmartin and Callie Miller both added five kills each good for the second most kills on the squad. Mary Kate Kotzin and Cadence Spilotros rounded out the hot swings added four kills. Riese Johnson led the setting effort with 12 assists.
Johnson was a single dig from a double double as she led the team with nine. Lily Swanson had the second most digs with seven with Gilmartin having six. The Bobcat had an impressive day at the net with a season high of five solo blocks. Brooke Roberts was outstanding nabbing three of those.
The second match of the day was against the Tornadoes of Talladega. The Bobcats fell in set one 25-14 but managed to nab a second set 25-20 win. They then fell 25-20 and 25-17 in the final two sets.
Rachel Machovec led the offensive effort in game two with nine kills. Fisher had the second most kills with five while Abby Infante added four to round out the offensive leaders. Johnson had a spectacular game setting and on defense picking up yet another double-double of the season. 19 assists and 13 digs were her numbers today.
Johnson with her 13 digs led the team with libero Olivia Alvarez not far behind her with 10. Machovec and Miller both added nine apiece to cap off the dig leaders. At the net the Bobcats recorded five solo blocks to tie their season high. Kotzin was the leading blocker with four of those solo blocks and a block assist.
The Bobcats, who improved to 10-4, are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 27) to start off Peach Belt Conference play against Augusta University at 6 p.m. in the Centennial Center.
