ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. | Eckerd College swept a baseball doubleheader from Georgia College & State University Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon at the Turley Complex.
The Tritons earned a 13-8 win in the opener before holding on for a 7-6 decision in the nightcap.Â
Eckerd improved to 3-2, while the Bobcats fell to 4-2. The final game of the three-game series will be at noon Sunday (Feb. 11).
The Tritons used scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings to break open the first game.
Bradley Wilson (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats.
GCSU collected 13 hits in the opener, led
Matthew Mebane's second homer of the season.
Evan Cowan,
Hank Noonan,
Gabriel Wuerth and
Mason Poole each collected two hits, while Cowan and Worth drove in two runs each.
In the nightcap, GCSU scored twice in the first inning.
Cam McNearney knocked the first run on a single through the left side, while
Braeden Smith pushed across another run on a ground out.
After Eckerd got a run back in second, GCSU took a 4-1 lead after Mebane smacked his second homer of the day - a two-run shot to left field - in the top of the third. The Bobcats added another run on a Poole home run to center field an inning later. Eckerd retook the lead at 7-5 after the Tritons scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
GCSU got a run back in the top of the eighth on Noonan's home run to left field to close within a run at 7-6, but that would be as close as the Bobcats would get.
John Luke Glanton (1-1) took the loss for Georgia College. Reliver
Lex Kenny recorded five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
GCSU was outhit 15-8, but three of the eight hits were home runs. Eight of the nine starters each had a hit for the Bobcats.
