MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Baseball fell 7-4 to No. 1 ranked University of Tampa in game two of the series.
GCSU fell to 5-5 on the season with Tampa improving to a perfect 8-0. These squads will wrap up the series Sunday, Feb. 18 on noon.
The Spartans took the lead in the first inning on a three run home run and never looked back. The Bobcats made it a one run ball game in third inning as
Brandon Bellflower pushed the first run around on a single through the right side to make it 3-1. Bellflower then stole second to draw a throw from the Tampa catcher forcing a throwing error which allowed
Evan Cowan from the third to make it 3-2.
UT countered the Bobcats' two spot with one of their own taking the 5-2 lead in the fourth inning. The fifth inning was much of the same for the visitors putting their final two runs on the board making it a 7-2 game. In the home half of the fifth inning, GCSU would bring a run around to score on a miscue by the Spartans defense to make it 7-3. Georgia College would then plate their fourth and final run of the game on a
Matthew Mebane double off the right center field wall.
Mebane led the Bobcat offense as the lone player with multiple hits on the day in his 2-for-4 performance. Cowan had the most runs scored as he rounded the bases twice. Mebane and Bellflower accounted for the only two RBI of the day while Mebane and Rand Besterman had the only multibase knocks of the day.
John Luke Glanton got the start and the loss on the mound for Georgia College. Glanton (1-2) had four earned runs come around to score on seven hits while nabbing four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
Mason Brown got the relief effort throwing three and a third innings with no runs scoring on a single hit with three strikeouts.
