No. 1 Tampa wins series finale with GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The top-ranked University of Tampa claimed the baseball series finale against Georgia College & State University 10-1 Sunday (Feb. 18) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Spartans improved to 9-0, while the Bobcats fell to 5-6. Georgia College travels to Tigerville, South Carolina, for a 3:30 p.m. game against No. 2 North Greenville University Wednesday (Feb. 21).

Tampa had three different players drive in two runs against the Bobcats. The Spartans took advantage of GCSU's wildness as the six Bobcat pitchers walked 11 and hit two others.

Georgia College outhit the Spartans for the second time in the series as the Bobcats clubbed 13 hits, compared to Tampa's 11. Five of GCSU's hits went for extra bases, but the Bobcats stranded 11 on base. Evan Cowan led the hit parade with three, while Matthew Mebane, Gabriel Wuerth and Rand Bestermann each had two. The lone run for Georgia College came in the sixth as Braeden Smith doubled to left-center field to lead off and Cam McNearney drove him home with his single back up the middle. Besides Smith, Brandon Bellflower, Mebane, Mitch Cowan and Bestermann each collected a double.

Starter John Raines (1-1) absorbed the loss for the Bobcats.
