MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to give the Bobcats a 4-1 non-conference baseball victory over Tuskegee University Friday (Feb. 2) evening at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats improved to 1-0, while the Golden Tigers fell to 0-1. The teams will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 3).
Tuskegee took a 1-0 in the top of the first on a Stephon Wright RBI single as the Golden Tigers took advantage of a leadoff walk. The Bobcats tied the game at 1 in the third on an unearned run that scored on
Brandon Bellflower's double to left center.
GCSU broke the game open with two runs in the sixth off Tuskegee starter Jaylen Hill (0-1).
Matthew Mebane and
Gabriel Wuerth reached on singles, while
Hank Noonan walked to load the bases.
Mason Poole gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Rand Bestermann drove in an insurance run on a single to right. Georgia College got its final run an inning later on a
Braeden Smith sacrific fly to center field.
Lex Kenny (1-0) earned the win in relief. He scattered three hits, while striking out seven and issuing just one walk over four innings. He struck out the first four hitters he faced and ended the ninth inning by striking out the side.
Bellflower and Weurth each collected two of the six hits for the Bobcats.
