MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The University of North Georgia baseball team edged Georgia College & State University 4-3 in a non-conference game Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
The Nighthawks improved to 9-2 as they evened the weekend series with the Bobcats at 1. GCSU fell to 6-8. The teams will play the rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 25).
Three of the four runs scored by North Georgia were unearned as the Nighthawks made the most of three GCSU miscues.
After North Georgia took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second, the Bobcats tied it at 1 in the second.
Braeden Smith led off with a double to right-center and scored on
Gabriel Wuerth's double to right-center.
GCSU took the lead at 2-1 on
Evan Cowan's RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth. However, the lead was a short one as the Nighthawks scored three runs - two of them unearned - in the sixth.
The Bobcats got a run back to cut the deficit to 4-3 as
Matthew Mebane led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to right-center field. It was Mebane's team-leading fifth homer of 2024.
Wes Lott (4-0) earned the win, while Jacob Lassiat earned his first save as he wiggled out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth as he stranded two runners on base.
John Luke Glanton (1-3) took the loss for the Bobcats.
GCSUÂ outhit North Georgia 10-6 with
Brandon Bellflower, Mebane and Wuerth accounting for two hits apiece.
