MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University softball closed out the opening weekend series against Emmanuel University (Ga.) with a 7-3 win.
GCSU improved to 2-1 on the season while EU fell to 1-2. The Bobcats return to action Sat. Feb 10 in Columbus, Georgia for the Red-White-Blue Classic. The first game will be against Union University at noon.
Georgia College jumped on Emmanuel early plating a run in the first inning after two walks and a fielders choice.
Kam Caldwell came around to score first on a double stolen base from her and
Jessica Owens who moved to second. GCSU led 1-0 at the end of the first.
Come the third inning, the Bobcats put two runners on and Owens drove them in on a single up the middle.
Emily Hobbs led off the inning reaching on an error by the shortstop then moved into scoring position on a stolen base. Caldwell moved her to third on a hard hit single to the pitcher then picked up her second stolen base of the day. With that two spot the lead increased to 3-0.
The fifth inning was a big one for GCSU with four runs coming around to score which improved the lead to 7-1.
Maddie Todd reached base via a single through the left side for the first base runner of the inning.
Karlie Gutierrez followed with a four pitch walk to move Todd into scoring position.
Mackenzie Martin drove in Todd from second on an error by the Lion second baseman.
Kacie Wiggins followed with a single to left field to score Gutierrez to make it a 5-1 lead.
Emily Hutcheson reached on a walk to load the bases bringing up Hobbs who also walked to push Martin across to score. The final GCSU run came around to score on a sacrifice fly to right field from Caldwell.
Tiffany Caban had a stellar outing in her first collegiate game picking up the start and the win. The freshman threw five innings only allowing one run on six hits and a strikeout.
Sydney Lancaster closed the game throwing two innings with two runs scoring on three hits.
