Jones shutout helps Bobcats split day one of the Red-White-Blue Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball pick up the day one split with a 4-0 win over Union University and a 2-1 loss against Lenoir-Rhyne University. 

GCSU is now 3-2 on the season with Union falling to 5-3 and Lenoir-Rhyne improving to 6-5. Weather permitting, Georgia College will take on day two of the Red-White-Blue Classic with a 10:30 a.m. game with Tuskegee University and a 12:30 p.m. contest with the host team Columbus State University. 

The Bobcats took on Union in game one of the day picking up the 4-0 win. All of the run production occurred in the fourth inning. The inning started with back-to-back singles for Kam Caldwell and Jessica Owens to put two on. Caldwell would come around to score on the Stephanie Condland single through the right side for the first run of the ball game. GCSU would then take the 2-0 lead on an RBI ground out from Maddie Todd. Samantha Wilson picked up her first career hit as a Bobcat which was a two RBI double to the left center field wall. The fourth inning came to a close with a 4-0 Georgia College lead which doubled as the final score. 

Owens was the lone game one batter with multiple hits on the day going 2-for-3. Mackenzie Martin and Wilson were the lone Bobcats with multi-base hits on the day as both picked up doubles. 

Shelby Jones got the start and the win in the circle for the Bobcats. Jones (1-1) got her first shutout of the 2024 season throwing a complete game only allowing two hits while picking up a strikeout. 

Game two of the day was against Lenoir-Rhyne which fell in their favor 2-1. Fourth inning magic struck again for GCSU as the lone game two run came around in the fourth. Caldwell reached base on a single then advanced 60 feet on a stolen base. She would then come around to score on an Owens double to the left field wall. LR plated a run in the fourth and sixth innings to take the win. 

Owens and Caldwell accounted for all four of the Bobcat hits going 2-for-2 and 2-for-3 respectively. 

Jana Shellhorse got the start in the circle for Georgia College. Shellhorse (1-1) pitched five and a third innings allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout. Golden Thrower closed the game for the Bobcats going two thirds innings allowing zero hits.
