Bobcats double down in doubleheader sweep over SWU

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball took down Southern Wesleyan University in both ends of the midweek doubleheader. Georgia College took game one 10-4 and game two 10-2 in run rule fashion. 

GCSU improved to 15-12 on the season with SWU falling to 12-10. The Bobcats return to conference play on Saturday, March 16 at the Peeler Complex to take on the University of South Carolina-Aiken starting at 1 p.m.

Game one went in favor of GCSU with 10 runs scoring on 11 hits. SWU struck first scoring a run in the first inning on an error. Georgia College countered with four run bottom half of the frame which started on a pair of walks from Emily Hobbs and Kam Caldwell. Jessica Owens scored Hobbs on an RBI single up the middle to tie the ball game. Karlie Gutierrez rifled a double to the left center field fence to plat Caldwell good for the first Bobcat lead, 2-1. Stephanie Condland made it 4-1 on a two RBI single through the right side. Southern Wesleyan chipped into the lead making it 4-3 on a two run homer. The GCSU offense countered with a two run second inning. Hobbs drilled a triple through the right center field gap to make it 5-3. Caldwell drove Hobbs around on an RBI ground out. The Bobcats had a big fifth inning with four runs scoring on six hits. Gutierrez picked up two more RBI on a triple through right center field making it 8-3. Condland pushed her around on her second single of the day. Eliza Kuhne plated the final run for the Bobcats on a single to left field. SWU scored in the seventh inning but lost 10-4. 

Hobbs, Gutierrez, and Condland all went 2-for-3 in the first contest. Hobbs had a double with two runs scored and an RBI. Gutierrez rifled a double and a triple driving in three runs and coming around to score twice. Condland had a pair of singles to nab three RBI. 

Shelby Jones got the start and the complete game win in the circle. Jones had a great game with only three of the four runs scoring being earned on four hits with three strikeouts. 

GCSU struck first in game two on a round trip opposite field moon shot by Condland. Gutierrez extended the lead picking up two RBI on a single to right center field. Mackenzie Martin nabbed two RBI of her own on a single up the middle to make it a 5-0 ball game. Maddie Todd rifled her first multi-base hit of the game with an RBI triple to the center field fence. Southern Wesleyan plated two in the fourth to make it 6-2. Todd put the Bobcats up 9-2 as she lasered a bases clearing double through the left center field gap. Samantha Wilson picked up a pinch hit effort and earned a bases loaded walk-off walk to win the game 10-4. 

Owens, Gutierrez and Todd went 2-for-3 in game two. Owens had a pair of singles. Gutierrez had two singles to drive in two runs and came around to score. Todd drove in four RBI on a double and a triple to lead the team. Condland went 1-for-2 with a homer. 

Tiffany Caban got the start and the complete game win in the circle for game two. In her superb performance, Caban only allowed two earned runs on two hits while striking out six just one shy of her season high.
